Let's dive a little deeper...

A purifying procedure produces ceresin wax from ozokerite. Ceresin is primarily used to keep stick-type products nice and solid. It is an emulsifier that aids in the emulsion of some products, like balms and pomades. It serves as an alternative to beeswax in ointments. It is a white-to-yellow waxy hydrocarbon mixture.

Ceresin acts as a viscosity-controlling and emulsion-stabilizing agent in cosmetics and personal care products. As a wax, it aids in the hardening of lipid (oil)-based products like balm or pomade. Additionally, it lessens brittleness and gives various stick cosmetics, like lipstick, strength and stability. Because of its high melting point and stability, it frequently serves as a Beeswax substitute. This ingredient is primarily used in personal care products like lipstick, lip/eyeliner, lip gloss, eye shadow, facial moisturizer, mascara, and anti-ageing serum. It can be used at a concentration of up to 48% in eyeshadow.

  • Skin care: With the formulation's context, it is significant. In protective creams, it is typically used as a beeswax and paraffin replacement. It enhances the stability, viscosity, and suspension qualities of skin care preparations

  • Hair care: It is suitable as an antistatic because of its long chain and saturated hydrocarbon structure, which prevent it from carrying any charge on the structure. Additionally, it creates a layer that repels water on top of the hair shaft, conditioning hair and giving it a bouncy, shiny appearance

Ceresine, a wax derived from ozokerite, has a rich history in various industries, especially cosmetics. Here's a comprehensive overview covering its description, history, and cosmetics usage:

Description: Ceresine is a type of wax characterized by its properties, such as high melting point and viscosity. It is a complex mixture of hydrocarbons and is derived from ozokerite, a naturally occurring mineral wax found in certain rock formations. Ceresine typically appears as a solid, odorless substance with a smooth texture, making it suitable for various applications.

History: The history of ceresine dates back to the 19th century when it was first introduced as an alternative to beeswax and other natural waxes. Its development gained momentum as the industrial revolution progressed, leading to an increased demand for waxes suitable for various industrial and commercial purposes.

The name "ceresine" is believed to have originated from Ceres, the Roman goddess of agriculture and fertility, symbolizing its nurturing and protective properties.

Cosmetics Usage: Ceresine has found extensive use in the cosmetics industry due to its beneficial properties:

  1. Binding Agent: It serves as a binding agent in cosmetics, helping ingredients stick together and providing structure to various formulations like lipsticks, creams, and lotions.

  2. Emollient: Ceresine acts as an emollient, aiding in moisturizing and softening the skin. It creates a protective barrier, preventing moisture loss and keeping the skin hydrated.

  3. Stabilizer: In cosmetic products, it works as a stabilizer, ensuring the uniform distribution of ingredients and preventing separation.

  4. Thickening Agent: Ceresine contributes to the viscosity of cosmetic formulations, giving them the desired consistency and texture.

  5. Lip Care Products: It is commonly used in lip balms, lipsticks, and glosses due to its ability to provide a smooth texture and long-lasting wear.

  6. Creams and Lotions: Its emollient properties make it a valuable ingredient in creams and lotions, contributing to their moisturizing effects.

While ceresine has been widely used in the cosmetics industry, concerns have been raised about its origins from crude oil and its potential environmental impact. As a result, some companies have started exploring alternative natural waxes or synthetic substitutes to meet consumer demands for more eco-friendly ingredients.

Despite these concerns, ceresine remains a prevalent ingredient in many cosmetic formulations due to its versatile properties and its ability to enhance the texture, stability, and performance of various skincare and makeup products.
